A Letter Home

Your final activity in this unit will be to assume the role of an African American migrant from the South in the early decades of the 20th century. Why did you move? Pull together what you have learned in the unit and write a 2-3 paged letter home to your family explaining what motivated you to move and what you found up North. Include references to any of the materials in the Reading and Images assignments as well as any other materials you find in your own research. You are welcome to include snapshots or sketches to support what you are saying in the letter.

Evaluation Guidelines -
  • Your letter includes evidence that you are familiar with a variety of reasons that migrants had for making the move North.
